Cardverse: A Case Study (that really isn't one.)

Hello gaymers and happy new year! Today we will be revisiting an old official au called Cardverse. Keep in mind that this is going to be an entirely different version of it rather than canon Cardverse, and 90% of it will be just my sorry behind rambling about the wonders and glories of political relations and why IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO.

🔶Kingdom of Diamonds🔶

Ruler: Our Majesty Francis Bonnefoy, King/Queen of Diamonds; Beside him Prime Minister Erika Vogel and Royal Financial Advisor Vasch Zwingli (spelt his name wrong ik.)

The Kingdom of Diamonds; one of the wealthiest kingdoms in the land with a very turbulent history. Centuries ago, the king and queen upheld the most power (aside from Lords and Aristocrats). This imbalance of power would spark a revolt that would last for decades until a new form of government was put into place. (Not really.)

The Kingdom of Diamonds lies South, known for their very warm climates which contribute to their bountiful crops. They are responsible for 75% of the food distribution to other neighboring kingdoms. They are sometimes subsequently referred to as the "Brighter South" due to the amount of sunshine that contributes to their warm climate. However, they are often hindered by bad storms and monsoons from June until November.

While still under a monarchy, the Diamonds kingdom has it's own prime minister that keeps everything and everyone in check, this includes the king (or queen). Erika and Vasch act as some sort of caretaker for Francis, making sure that he's safe and not frivolously spending his inheritance on useless things such as new land, etc. Some have said that the King/Queen is too incompetent to be ruling a kingdom due to several factors: His emotional sensitivity, him being a people pleaser, and his overly flamboyant nature. Other has praised the king in his efforts in helping improve the lives of his people and his kind nature.

♠️The United Spades♠️

Ruler: Commander in Chief and President Alfred F. Jones; beside him Vice President Arthur Kirkland, and Secretary of State Chun-Yan Wang

From a small monarchy to one of the largest democracies in the land, The United Spades (actual name The United Spades of Aces) holds a lot of power than one may know.

They reside North, having to deal with several harsh winters. The Spades Kingdom has many various industrial sites. Unfortunately because of this, it is said to be the kingdom with the highest recorded rate of pollution.

The birth of the Spade's democracy still remains under debate by some historians. Some may have suggested it had ended after the death of the President's mother, who was said to be the last Queen of what once was the Kingdom of Spades. Others may have concluded that it emerged at the end of some sort of civil war; though these events had coincided with each other. Despite these events, the Spades are relatively young.

While he holds much authority over everyone, Alfred does struggle to keep many things in check; some praise him for his hard work while others criticize him for hurting some aspect of his community.

The Hearts Kingdom resides in the western portion of the lands, also known as the "Western Kingdom" or "The Wild West". Much like the Empire of Clubs, they have a very fair climate. Average to the point where there is not much to comment on.

Not much is known about the Heart's Kingdom or what it's known for. It is rumored that the current queen isn't the real queen, and that something must've happened behind closed doors. Despite Ludwig being king and having the same amount of power, Lucrezia has the most authority over everybody. There is something about her that'll give you an aching feeling in your gut. But who is Sakura?

♣️The Empire of Clubs♣️

Ruler: Emperor Ivan Braginsky and Empress Elizabeta Hedevary and Jack of all trades Clubs Roderich Edelstein

The Empire of Clubs lies just to the east, majority of its territory landlocked by mountains and valleys. It's a place where not much goes on, not even among the monarchs who hold the power of the world within their hands. Some travelers from other kingdoms will return with how reserved most of the people are, giving them this quiet reputation.

Although quiet, they are well known for their clean environment and vast green valleys. Because of this they have a very diverse ecosystem and dedicate their fundings to preserving the homes of many species whether by land or by sea. It is even rumored that Ivan has a giant pet polar that was stolen from a neighboring kingdom elsewhere. Although due to the privacy of the royals, this cannot be confirmed nor denied.

Hetalia Cardverse AU

Hello, I'm building the world of my Hetalia Cardverse AU fanfiction

I'm trying to sort the various character into the four suits (even though I probably won't use all of them anyways), but I need help for some, so I made a Google Doc with polls for you to vote (while choosing, remember the main characteristic about each kingdom that I listed both below and on the google doc):

The world has 4 Kingdoms:

♤Kingdom of Spades♤: military power

◇Kingdom of Diamonds◇: wealth

♡Kingdom of Hearts♡: spirituality

♧Kingdom of Clubs♧: labour

The Kings (America, France, Germany, Russia), Queens (England, Liechtenstein, Japan, Hungary), Jacks (China, Switzerland, Italy, Austria) and Jokers (Prussia, Sealand) are canon, so I need to sort the rest of the characters

I'm also sure about the Aces for every suit: Canada for Spades, Monaco for Diamonds, Romano for Hearts, Lithuania for Clubs

I'm reading ukus cardverse fic again and I've been thinking. (A dangerous conflation, I am aware, but stay with me here.)

The bigger part of cardverse fics surrounding Queen Arthur and King Alfred are either about them being a happily married couple who has to face some kind of trouble - be it alternate selves or other kingdoms invading - or (soon to be) King of Spades Alfred chasing after Arthur as his destined Queen. Both concepts that I adore and love to read over and over again, but now I was thinking - what if Arthur is the first one to get his mark and snatch all power over the kingdom?

I've also read about the idea of Arthur being a controlling, maybe even evil Queen who only manipulates innocent, guillibe Alfred and pulls all strings in the back to secretely rule the kingdom on his own, but that isn't quite what I was think of now.

It would be interesting to explore a completely different route. An alternate cardverse, if you'd like to call it that.

Being a couple of years older than Alfred, Arthur's mark shows earlier and of course he knows what those intricate, dark lines on his skin mean, everyone does - wealth, power, and royalty. Conveniently, exactly the three things that the ruthless pirate captain Arthur Kirkland lives for. Before the new King of Spades can be found, Arthur finds his way onto the throne, leaving behind a trail of blood where threats don't get him through.

Crowned as the Queen of Spades with no one daring to question his status, Arthur keeps sailing the seas, always searching for whoever the gods, the aracana appoints as his king. But not out of love for his devinely selected spouse, but to secure his position as the lone ruler of the kingdom of Spades.

Bonus: Alfred not only ends up with his royal mark appearing during the height of the chaos Captain Arthur Kirkland has risen with his regency. No. He's also one of young man who hired on the captain's main ship the last time he went back to Spades to take care of some duties as the Queen that require his presence.

Will Arthur discover that the rather pretty young man who recently set foot to his ship is the one he's looking for to take out of his way? Will Alfred manage to keep the mark hidden from his Captain/Queen and run off before fate pulls him into arms that want him detained and not held close? Will Arthur be able to resist the temptation that was put on his ship in the form of sunkissed skin, eyes like the sea, and an almost irresistable smile?

Who knows.

“You cannot marry another. You chose me. You love me, you said so yourself,” Arthur was indignant.

“And you denied me. You may have sold your heart to the throne but mine is still free to bestow,” Alfred replied, his tone flat, dull.

It was a lie. His heart was Arthur’s. He had given in to him 3 months ago alongside the wreath of crimson roses, declaring him that tournaments Queen of Love and Beauty. Then again, maybe it was before that, Alfred may have snuck it to him when they were children: playing under the table during one of his Father’s many banquets, climbing on the chipped tiles on the roof of the red keep, in bed whilst they joked about dragons and futures and marriage. It didn’t matter when, Alfred knew he didn’t have it anymore. No, it rested in the dainty, gloved hands of Arthur, cradled to his chest like a precious thing, an object to parade around as a sign of his own worth and loveliness.

“Why would you confess to me just to throw yourself into the arms of another. We’ve always been together Alfred, ever since we were children. It’s how it’s always been and how it always will be. It’s not within our control, a greater power than thou have decided it. Just because I cannot have you in one way, your way, doesn’t mean I can’t have you there at all,” Arthur was frantic now. His words seemed to spill out of him, hurried and choking, thick with a fear of something intangible to young Alfred.

“You are a cruel, selfish thing Arthur. Do not do this to me. Set me free. Give it back and be done with this. You have every jewel, every silver, every silk found under the sun of the world – just let me have this.” It was murmured. It wasn’t shame or humiliation which cast his eyes to the floor, no, his love was pure, and he was proud to have felt it, nurtured it. Instead, it was the pain, the ache of his heart which felt like a vacuum in his ribcage. It swallowed the air inside of him, left his bones shrivelled and his blood sharp in his veins. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. Is that what they meant by sickness. He always thought it meant love lost, dulled by years of torment or repetition. Yet Alfred had never had that love in the first place, he was loving backwards – dying from the terrible void in his chest, the emptiness of unrequited affections.

The problem was Arthur was spoilt, and hadn’t been denied a thing in his life. Always surrounded by wealth, attendants, admirers; they were easy in their flattery but lacking in sincerity, and Alfred knew the warmth of his pining heart would not be lost from Arthur’s grip so easily. But his hands were cold beneath his velvet gloves, his fingers bony and his nails sharp, and Alfred was hurting. His great feats of combat, his enormous strength, they could do nothing to defend him from the other boy. His physicality was a useless weapon in the ways of the soul; his sword arm lay dormant by his side, rather, it was his heart which reached and grappled aimlessly at the terrible distance between them.

Good Hands

When Arthur had first agreed to this arranged marriage with the King of Hearts, he hadn’t had high hopes. Sure, it would save Spades, but the current King of Hearts didn’t have the highest reputation when it came to friendly socialization. And Ludwig only proved those rumours true at first with his cold demeanour.

But really, Ludwig was just awkward and hid a soft heart underneath a cool yet collected facade. This reveal led to a blossoming friendship between the two.

Today, they were supposed to go on a tour of Hearts and further get to know each other. But Ludwig didn’t come down for breakfast that morning. Feliciano, The Jack of Hearts, had informed him that Ludwig woke up feeling ill and would probably not be able to do the tour.

“I can take you if you’d like,” Feliciano suggested, “Or even the Queen.”

Arthur smiled politely. “Oh no thank you. We can just postpone. At least for now.”

He ate his eggs and bacon quietly, hoping he didn’t look as disappointed as he felt.

“It’s nothing serious, I hope,” Arthur added after a moment.

Feliciano just smiled and waved his hand. “Oh, not at all. He just has been getting bouts of illness recently. I think it’s all the stress he puts himself under. I’m sure he’ll be right as rain after a few days rest.”

“I see…”

Something didn’t feel quite right. Ludwig had a nasty cough since he met the man. And Feliciano’s smile seemed just a little too tight. Perhaps there was an underlying condition Ludwig hadn’t felt comfortable exposing yet.

Arthur wouldn’t push of course, but he still wanted to check on him. Perhaps they could do the ‘get to know each other’ part of their plan.

After he finished his breakfast, Arthur headed up to Ludwig’s bedroom. The two guards bowed to him as he approached the door. “Is the king awake?”

They both shrugged. “We’re not sure,” one spoke, “The Queen asked for no one to enter other than the occasional maid with food and drink.”

Arthur deflated slightly, his stomach sinking. Why would no one be allowed to enter?

“But,” the other guard cut in, “I’m sure there is an exception for his betrothed, right Berwald?”

“Timo…” Berwald warned.

“Come on. You’d want me by your side would you not?

Berwald sighed. “Okay…”

Arthur smiled, polite, yet also relieved. “Thank you. Really. I promise I come with all good intentions. I’m just worried about him.”

The two guards gave him a nod as Arthur quietly entered.

“Who’s there?” came a raspy voice from the shadows.

“It’s me…Arthur…” Arthur called back softly. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“Mm…No. I got a pounding headache that won’t let me sleep.”

Arthur clicked his tongue and slowly approached the bed. In the dim pale light, Arthur could see the blotchy fever in Ludwig’s cheeks. He pressed a hand to Ludwig’s forehead.

“Quite the fever too,” Arthur noted. He turned to the side table which had a dish of cool water and a cloth. When he went to soak the cloth he found the water lukewarm. Tutting to himself he casted a simple enchantment making the water permanently cool.

Gently he draped the cool cloth over Ludwig’s forehead. “There,” he murmured, “That should help both the fever and the headache.”

Before Arthur could move his hand away, Ludwig placed his hand over his. Arthur froze.

“I’m glad you are here,” Ludwig murmured, looking up at him with glassy eyes, “I feel better already.”

Arthur’s heart fluttered rapidly as the words echoed in his ears. He shook his head. Ludwig was just delirious with fever. He yanked his hand back, holding it close to his chest.

“Get some rest,” he instructed, “You should be right as rain in no time.”

Arthur went to get up, but Ludwig grabbed his arm. Arthur looked back wide-eyed, too stunned to speak.

“Please…Stay…” Ludwig pleaded, voice raspy and soft.

When Arthur met his eyes, any protest dissipated. Such a strong man left so fragile. If he could offer any comfort, who was Arthur to deny that?

“Okay. As long as you rest.”

A couple of hours later, Feliciano came by to check on the king. What he hadn’t expected to see was Ludwig and Arthur fast asleep, Ludwig’s head resting on Arthur’s shoulder and Arthur’s arm wrapped around Ludwig. Feliciano smiled to himself as he turned away, knowing the king was in good hands.
